A remarkable change has been witnessed in the rural economy due to adoption of agricultural technology in the State. The seed quality and varietal improvement had played a very important role in better utilization of inputs in different agro-climatic conditions of the state. The direct contribution of quality seed alone to total production has been estimated at around 15-20% depending upon the crop.  The role of quality seed has now become more important.

There is an area of 367.35 hect. for production of quality seeds of categories foundation seed/certified seed/TFL seeds on the University main Farm in addition to the area under Research and fodder production for Animal Farm of Lala Lajpat Rai University of Vety. & Animal Sc. All the operations starting from seed bed preparations to harvesting/thrashing are fully mechanized.  There is seed processing plant with capacity of 2 ton per hour installed in the Directorate for grading, processing and packing of the quality seeds under the supervision of qualified Plant Engineer-cum-Manager.

The mandate of the Directorate of Farms is to produce and supply the quality and high yielding seeds i.e. Foundation/Certified/TFL category of various Rabi and Kharif crops to the seed growers for further multiplication and farmers during the Kisan Melas/Farm Darshan organized by the University and Kisan Seva Kendra. The Haryana Seeds Development Corporation is the major buyer of the foundation seeds produced by this Directorate. The HSDC place the indent of foundation seed of various crops and accordingly the cropping plan is finalized by the Cropping Plan Committee of the University.  The additional seed produced is being supplied to the Government Agencies like IFFCO, KRIBHCO, N.S.C. and private seed growers.  This Directorate is producing and supplying the quality seeds of latest varieties released by our university as well as by other universities for further multiplication so as to meet the demand of the seeds in the State.  This Directorate also renders the tractors alongwith transport vehicle and water tankers facilities to the research schemes of the university.
