  Mandate
  • To impart teaching in the field of Soil Science to under graduate and post graduate students
  • To conduct research in different disciplines of Soil Science including Pedology, Soil Survey, Remote Sensing, Soil Fertility, Soil Chemistry, Soil Physics, Water Management, Soil Salinity, Soil Pollution and in any new area depending on requirement of the State.
  • Transfer of technology to the farmers through KVKs and government agencies.
   Priority areas in research
  • Sustaining soil productivity through integrated nutrient management under different cropping systems and agro-climatic zones.
  • Soil conservation, preservation and management for sustainable agriculture
  • To develop targeted yield equations for newly developed high yielding varieties of crops.
  • Micronutrient management in soils for higher crop productivity.
  • Screening of crop varieties for their tolerance to Zn, Fe and Mn stress and their biofortification.
  • Site specific nutrient management in rice-wheat cropping system.
  • Impact of climate change on soil processes and water resources.
  • Water management strategies in different cropping systems.
  • Fertigation experiments in wide spaced crops to enhance fertilizer and water use efficiency by using drip system.
  • Use of poor quality waters in Agriculture.
  • Screening of crop varieties in relation to poor quality water.
  • Preparation of water quality maps by using GPS and GIS techniques.
  • Management of problematic soils, remediation of polluted/contaminated soils.

   Research Achievements of the Department of Soil Science
  Priority Areas in Teaching
In recent past the University has given new dimension to Soil Science education programmes by introducing need based courses such on remote sensing, system approach in crop production and soil and water pollution, along with some improvement in the existing ones. PG students from other states of India Viz., W.Bengal, Assam, Karnataka, Tamilnadu, A.P., Orissa, Bihar, U.P., Rajasthan, Punjab, H.P. and foreign countries too are being trained in different areas of Soil Science.

  Soil Testing Service
  • Regional Soil Testing Laboratories are providing following services to the farmers.
  • Analysis of soil and water samples brought by the farmers and other agencies.
  • nterpretation of soil and water test results and making proper recommendations of fertilizers and /under ground tube well water for irrigation to different crops.
  • Promoting the balanced use of fertilizers including micronutrients on soil test basis.
  • Rendering farm advisory service to farmers and other agencies.
  • Providing free postal services to the farmers and other agencies for sending the soil and water testing reports.
  • Soil Health Week cum Soil and Water Testing Campaign: Department of Soil Science and Directorate of Extension Education jointly organize the Soil Testing Campaign cum Soil Health Week in different villages of Haryana every year.
