  About us

The Department of Sociology came into existence in October 1971 as a constituent department of the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities. Earlier the discipline of sociology was with the Department of Extension Education, College of Agriculture and in erstwhile Punjab Agricultural University, with the Department of Economics. Since, 1971 the Department has been fast developing to achieve excellence. Dr. M.L. Sharma was the founder Head of the Department followed by Dr. R.K. Punia, Dr. Raj Singh, Dr.Chander Bhan and  Dr. P. S. Malik, Dr.(Mrs) Savita Vermani and Sushila Dahiya.

1. Achieved Natinal Award-1998 for Best Marketing Research Work on Consumers‘ Preferences and Consumption Pattern of Processed Foods among Working and Non-Working Women by Nirmal, Deep Punia and R.K.Punia. The National Award was given by All India Food Processors Association and it was presented by Shri S. Shahnawaz Hussain, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Food Processing Industries at the Annual Conference held on 10.12.1999 at New Delhi. .
2. Dr.P.S.Malik was awarded Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship in Canada for higher studies (1983-85).
3. Dr.P.S.Malik was awarded HAU Merit Fellowship during M.Sc.(Sociology) (1975-76).
4. Dr.P.S.Malik received Indian Council of Agricultural Research Scholarship during B.Sc.(Hons.)Ag. (1969-73).
5. Dr. P.S.Malik was awarded Overseas Research Award 1981 and 1982 by a Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Universities of U.K. but did not avail.
6. Dr. Raj Singh, Junior Research Fellowship, University Grants Commission, New Delhi from 1975-78.
7. Dr. R.K.Punia, Indian Council of Social Sciences, New Delhi, faculty improvement scholarship, from 1978-82.

12. Paper on 'Consumer's preference and consumption pattern of processed foods-a study of working & non-working women by Nirmal, Deep Punia & R.K. Punia published in Indian Food Packer's selected for GITSA WARD-1998 for best paper on marketing. 
13. Dr. Raj Singh attended 3rd Asia-Pecific Sociology Associations Conference under AHRD held at Cheju National University, South Korea from Feb.1-10, 1999.
14. Dr. Kailash Chander, a Ph.D. scholar of the Department was awarded 'Mexican Govt. Fellowship' 2001-2002 for advance studies at National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) from Feb., 02 to July, 03 on Natural Resource Management in Agriculture - A Cross Cultural Study. 15. Dr. Subhash Chander a Ph.D. scholar of the Deptt. was awarded Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship from April 2010 to March 2013 sponsored by UGC.

  Other Achievements

Sh. Ashok Kumar, Sr. Scale Stenographer, O/o Sociology, COBS&H participated in 35th National Masters Athletics Championship held at Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) from 24th February to 27th February, 2014. He won Bronze Medal in this tournament in 5KM Walk Race in 40+ Age Group.
