Academic Programs

Post graduate program leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Chemistry

Major achievements of the department

The department of Chemistry and Physics runs excellent teaching programs at M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree levels in three major branches of Chemistry namely – Physical, Organic and Inorganic. Annually, the department offers 35 courses for the undergraduate and postgraduate classes. In addition to carrying out its own teaching work in Chemistry, the department also provides help to other Departments of university who adopt Chemistry as a minor or a supporting subject for the partial fulfillment of the requirement of their postgraduate degree programs. Every five years the course curriculum in chemistry and physics are revised in accordance with the latest developments and advances in the subject. The department, from time to time, updates its practical manuals according to the latest available techniques and thus guides the other departments of the university in adopting the new and more precise analytical methods useful in their respective fields of research.
The department has a team of highly qualified and experienced teaching staff who have shown excellence both at the national and international levels. They have shown their mark not only in teaching and research fields but also in the co-curricular activities. Some of the faculty members in the department are the active members and fellows of the reputed scientific societies, they represent at the academic bodies such as the Board of Studies of various other universities and have worked as visiting scientists in India and abroad. The department has successfully completed a number of research projects and some are currently in progress, both in the areas of pure chemistry as well as those having application in agriculture. The department is well known for its having excellent working environment in terms of quality teaching, very adequate infrastructural facilities and for its best and cordial teacher-taught relations. Many of our forner students after completing their M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees, are now occupying various positions in reputed national and international organization. Some of them also have adopted teaching as their professional carrier.

Research Highlights

The department of Chemistry and Physics has strong research programs both in the areas of pure chemistry as  well as those having applications in Agriculture. Some of the important topics of research which have been pursued in the past and are also currently in progress include- Physico-chemical  studies of Inorganic complexes; synthetic organic/medicinal/pesticide chemistry; chemical constituents and insecticidal natural products ; synthesis of agro-chemicals having biological activity; synthesis and characterization of bioactive compounds with  antifungal, antibacterial and nematicidal activity; studies of complexes of transition metals & lanthanides; synthesis and structural  elucidation of novel organic legends and their co-ordination compounds; Physico-chemical  studies of surfactant solutions; synthesis and characterization of noble metal nanoparticles and their application as selective catalysts; X-ray cross-sections and monitoring of environmental pollutants; Optimization of parameters of nuclear track filters; and trace analysis of micro-elements in plants and soil.
The department has successfully completed a number of research projects financed by the ICAR, C.S.I.R. and other agencies. The research findings from the various research programs in Chemistry and Physics have been presented at the National and International conferences and also published in the form of a large number of papers in reputed journals. Apart from the various research programs being carried out in the department its faculty members are lending support to other departments of the university in interdisciplinary co-ordinated research programs, particularly, in the areas of Entomology, Soil Sciences and Plant Breeding. In Recognition of the excellent research activities in the department some of its faculty members and students have been offered national scientific awards and visiting fellowships.
