Biochemistry at a Glance
The science of Biochemistry has gained importance in recent
years through its rapid and revolutionary advances.
It is a science whose boundaries now encompass all
aspects of biology, medicine, health sciences,
agriculture and ecology. Therefore, a student
pursuing a career in any of the above disciplines,
should be well verse in biochemistry. Hence its
inclusion both at UG and PG curricula in biology,
biotechnology, agriculture, medicine and food
sciences has become imperative.
This department has up to date teaching and research facilities and
offers both M.Sc and Ph.D. programmes. The areas of
specialisation include plant biochemistry, animal
biochemistry, enzymology, nutritional biochemistry,
biochemistry of fruit ripening, molecular biology,
intermediary metabolism, biochemistry of biotic and
abiotic stresses, biochemistry of environmental
pollution. To date about 167 M.Sc and 65 Ph.D
students have obtained their degrees in
Biochemistry. Besides post graduate programmes,
courses are also offered for undergraduate and
post-graduate students of different departments of
constituent colleges of this university.
Biochemistry is opted as a minor and supporting
subject by a large number of post graduate students.
Nature and outlines of the courses are so framed as
to cover all aspects and branches of biochemistry.
Course contents have been recently revised as per
UGC, ICAR, CSIR, ASRB and NET syllabi.
The department has vigorous research programme and has made several
notable contributions in various fields. A number of
research projects funded by State Government and
other scientific agencies such as ICAR, CSIR,
PL-480, DBT, DST, DAE, and Rockfeller Foundation
etc. had been in operation in the department from
time to time. Research achievements of the
department have been widely acclaimed and recognised
as is evident from awards and honours conferred upon
the faculty members.
Our system of education at M.Sc and Ph. D. level is practically
different from KUK and MDU as our Master’s and
doctoral curricula comprise of courses from major,
minor and supporting subjects and partial fulfilment
of both degrees by research/ thesis submission.
During the last two decades or so, a lot of information has been
generated regarding 3-D structures of macromolecules
as structural studies have always had a profound
effect on the development of biology. In all,
adding of new courses enlisted as above will make up
the deficiencies/gaps. Further, increased emphasis
will be given on biophysical techniques in the
practical course of Biochemical Techniques. That
will bring us near to or equal to the developed
institutes and laboratories thus opening new areas
of career development and employment.
